What is a parka?
A parka is a type of outerwear coat characterized by its large hood, designed to keep wearers warm and protected in harsh, cold weather. The earliest iterations are attributed to Indigenous Arctic Peoples. The word “parka” itself is thought to mean “animal skin” in the Tundra Nenets (northwestern Siberia). By the 1950s, the U.S. military adopted parkas with fur-trimmed hoods for cold-weather gear. However, it wasn’t until the mid-1960s when British “mod” culture popularized the M-51 “fishtail” parka that this garment became a staple.
